PONTIANAK – Theory in lectures is considered insufficient without direct field experience. Recognizing this, the Chemistry Master’s Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Tanjungpura University (UNTAN), brought its students to conduct a live Laboratory Techniques practicum at the Pontianak Center for Standardization and Industrial Services (BSPJI) on Monday (April 27).

More than just a casual visit, this practicum focused on strengthening students’ technical competencies, particularly in operating a sophisticated Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). This tool is a crucial pillar in detecting and analyzing metal content in environmental samples.

Four Chemistry Master’s students from the Class of 2025 went hands-on with various water samples. Under the guidance of experts, they went through all the crucial stages of a professional laboratory—from the demanding preparation process, precision measurements, to the art of interpreting analytical data.

The selection of BSPJI Pontianak as a partner was certainly not without reason. As a laboratory officially accredited by the National Accreditation Committee (KAN), BSPJI offers the highest quality standards. For master’s students, this is a golden opportunity to experience firsthand the working atmosphere of a professional, industrial-scale laboratory.

Through this activity, these chemistry master’s candidates are expected to not only develop theoretical acumen but also solid technical skills and analytical precision. This real-world experience will provide valuable capital for them to apply these advanced instrument methods, both in academic research and in addressing future industrial challenges.
